Its all kicked off.

Very strange behaviour in the Piranha tank this evening. Lots of splashing and churning of the water. Cannot see now what is going on as the gravel has been disturbed. I can hear the heaters being banged about in there.
No idea what has started this off. The chicks I fed them earlier are all gone so they are not squabbling over them.
I have turned the lights off and the heaters so with a bit of luck that should calm them down. There is no way I am sticking my hand in there for a bit of a tidy up, especially with the water in that state, will let the filters do thier bit and then survey the damage afterwards. Bound to be some fin and body damage especially with the large female getting involved.

What strange pets to keep :-)
How often do they kick off like this?
Gary

First time they have been this bad. Just had a word on a tropical fish forum and drawn a blank. Soon as the water temp starts to drop they will slow down. But at the moment they are still going for it.

Very annoying to be honest because they seem to enjoy smashing into the heater stats, must be the noise it makes, or they know it winds me up!
kaz

How many do you keep in the tank Gary?
Gary

There are three adults in there, I started out many years ago with 10 babies the size of a 5 pence piece. The female in there is now around 10 inches long, I cant be exact as the thick glass and the water makes them look smaller than they are. The other two are males and they are around 7 or 8 inches long.

My fish are gay by comparison!!!! I get excited if my angel fish and siamese fighter exchange stern looks!!!

Piranha sound cool Gary, but I would be tempted to drop my kids pocket-money into the tank and dare them to fish it out
Gary

As long as they have been fed and you have no open wounds on your hands you are fairly safe putting your hands in the tank. The female could easily bite through your finger bone and all. She takes walnut sized bites out of the chicks I feed them.

They have calmed down now as the water has dropped below 20 degrees so they are now nice and slow. The tank however is trashed, The plants all pulled up, the heater stats lying on the gravel and the power heads lying with them.

A nice job for me in the morning.
kaz

Why do they need the heater?
Gary

They are tropical fish kaz and need water temp of around 26 degrees similar to that of thier native Amazon waters.

When the water cools they sort of go to sleep and you can pretty much carry out maintanance in the tank.

I usually trap them in one part of the tank and slide black perspex in, then do what I have to do. as waiting for the water to cool takes too long if you have an emergency in there such as food trapped in the filter uplifts.
kaz

Would they survive without the heater on overnight?
A garden centre in staffordshire used to have an 'indoor river' with phiranas in it and you could walk around the 'river' and over a bridge to look down at them - I never thought that it was heated
Gary

Yeah I have done it before when I had glass heater stats and they broke them electrifying the water.

They would be on the bottom by the morning though but still alive.

I would pay hard cash to see you drop the Fish Minnow's pocket money into a tank full of ravenous Piranhas. I will guarantee that not only will the coins have been retrieved in less than 3 seconds flat, but that the Minnows would have also enjoyed Piranha sushi.

I would also lay odds that within the following 30 minutes, Daddy Fish would have drilled the leftover Piranha teeth, threaded them onto a necklace cord, and would have posted a photo of it in OTGs Craft section. :q28: :q28: :q28:

Errr...yes ok Gareth.
Bazzer

Serious Gaz.

Could they have been having a bit of "Nudge,Nudge, Wink, Wink, know what I mean Squire.
Gary

Doubt that mate. Not easy to breed them in captivity.
The London Aquarium has nightmares breeding Piranha.

Its all quiet on the weston front, I was up at 5am putting thing straight inside the tank. Water back up to 26 now just debating what to give them for brekkie, mouse, chick or liver!
Bazzer

Do they not still go through the motions though and two to one could equal a bit of a scrap as per Siamese Fighters.
Gary

I'm not sure there bazzer, possibly I suppose.

The two males have suffered a bit in last nights goings on. The female is unmarked so maybe the two males where having a set to in there. I could not see as the water had churned up the gravel base.

All is calm now though and they are looking up at the surface so Mickey Mouse here is about to have a swim!
Bazzer

Dig Monty up. Shame to waste meat. :smt077 :: :q37:

I have but on old pictures. Digital camera flashes all the time and just reflects back and you cannot see nothing. I will have a go at putting some on here, I have some when they where smaller and there was more of them.
