It must be nearly spring.

Its that time of the year again and we have a few moleys working overtime  pushing up their spoil heaps everywhere. I've taken a walk around with my old mole pole and spade this morning and set three traps. It took me back a good few years to a time when I earned part of my living as a mole  trapper.
I maybe a bit rusty these days, so fingers crossed.

They seem worse this year than ever. Just don't try kicking the 'hills' when the ground is frozen.....it hurts

We have tons of them.... How do you do this? What tools do you need? Is there special training required? I'd love to be able to take care of our problem.

hi Rena, my mate in NYS told me that you don't have moles over there and that what you have are mole rats. Ours are totally different. These are what ours look like.

Rena

Yep. That's what ours look like too. ( http://extension.oregonstate.edu/question-of-the-week/backyard-moles )

Given your friend is approx 5000 miles from where I live, it is quite possible they don't have them.

The method you use, is it one listed on this link? I have only ever 'caught' one that was already close to the surface, using a shovel... I think a trap, like what you mentioned might be, um, nicer?
bodger

I stand corrected.

I'm very, very sorry if that came across as other than a statement

...would it be possible to hear how you trap moles?
bodger

Oh don't worry Rena, I've just nipped off to find this.

Rena

Thank you, bodger. I'll give a look and see if we have any such traps in our local farming stores. ...I can see this is gonna be quite an undertaking... The mole hills are starting to gain on the true mountains of our area!!!
hopefullbry

the next few weeks my traps will be out all over,  last week with the frosts its played havoc with my trapping jobs.

But mole jobs coming in thick and fast
bodger

Good news Bry
Right now, I've got myself a mini trap line on the go on our holding. In addition to my mole traps, I've got four Fenn traps set around my chicken sheds, my fox trap and to top it off, I'm also trying to get rid of a load of field voles that have set up home for the winter in  the polytunnel.
Rena

The voles used to LOVE our old barn (dirt floor) they'd start coming up about springtime usually.

Hope you have a good catch rate      I have Mole traps out / mice traps / rat traps & Squirrel too

Moles have gone nuts after all the frost we've had
bodger

I must start to practice what I preach. Two of the mole traps had been set off due to the little blighters filling them with soil.

So glad we don't have moles, voles, foxes or squirrels here. The catsand dogs keep the mice and  rats down only things are stotes, weasels, rabbits and hares.

Wow. The only thing you mentioned that we *don't* have are stotes?
