iplayer onto tv query

in a basic "im a girl" sort of way, can anyone explain to me how can I /what I need to watch iplayer etc on my main tv and not on the laptop screen.

I have a apple pro mac and a pioneer tv (if that makes a difference   )

You should be able to use an RS232 serial cable straight from your laptop into your tv if your tv supports it?

The RS232 socket is a pinned connection that looks similar to a 'lozenge' (see below?)

You can either use RS232-RS232 or USB-RS232 (either way)

You'll only get the sound through your laptop unless you want to go down the optical or HDMI cable route, but the picture will be full-definition. Hope this helps?

woodsmoke, absolutely... good point well made I think

thanks for the pics as I would never have known what your talking about, is it just as easy to make the sound come thru the tv? you mention hdmi or optical route, is that just another cable plugged in from laptop to tv?

You're very welcome!

Without seeing the laptop I wouldn't be able to guess which cables you'd need for the sound, but in essence, you're spot on with the optical & HDMI

The manual will probably have some info' tucked away somewhere in the pages if you have it?

A very good question indeed. and to take it on one step further can you record a programme on to a disc from I player? Its one that I've asked my techie son several times and the reply has always been a resounding " No"
If it can be done, then my son either doesn't know as much as he thinks he does, or he can't be doing with being mithered by his dear old dad.   There's many a time that I've missed a programme on TV that I would like to have recorded and it would be extemely handy if this could be done.

Rob does watch I player programmes through the telly but obviously, those programmes are lost after a week.

Yes, you can. I suspect the second part of your statement is indeed correct

Here you go

(Note: I've never tried this myself, as I don't use Iplayer enough to warrant it. I'm reliably informed it works fine though)

I'll get him to have a look at the link Stu.

thanks guys, I have connected my laptop to the tv and now can watch iplayer etc on the "big screen"  I also found a youtube clip by some guy who shows how to get sound thru the tv by adjusting the sound settings on my laptop. So only needed the one cable and took the other back for a refund.

Now to cancel my sky subscription
