Interesting? Why didn't I think of this?In the space of a few short months, it would appear that I've become a bit of an egg nut, so having nothing better to do with my time, I did a Google on the subject of brown eggs. Well ! I did say that I'd become an egg nut didn't I ?
I found an interesting bit in which a chap had been judging some egg classes at a show, only to find that the eggs which he'd awarded the best brown eggs in show, had been laid by some hens bred from a Welsummer cock to Warren Hybrid hens. It sounds like a cross almost made in heaven. The colour from the father and the ability to lay lots of eggs from the mother. Its got to be worth a try hasn't it?

Incidentally, I've hatched my first non white chick of the season. I set 7 Welsummer x Light Sussex and 2 pure Welsummer under a broody and the eggs have hatched over the last few days. There's no sign of any Welsummers and out of the sex linked crosses, there's only one brown female and all the rest are white. With this sex linked cross, the male chicks are white and the females brown.

Been there - done that! It works really well. In fact I also have AraucanaXLohman (warren type) who lat greeny blue eggs too. They lay like machines. Love Lizzie
