How to use the Deben mk3

I switched from the deben mk1 to the mk3 and found the mk3 a lot different than the mk1.

Just incase anybody is thinking of getting the mk3 heres a helpful bit of advice from Simon Whitehead.

They are all ferret locators. Which is just a collar and a reciever. The collar goes round the ferrets neck if the ferret lays up when rabbiting, the collar transmits a signal to the locator, the locator then pin points where the ferret is to half a foot, and you can then dig the ferret out.

thanks they say you learn something new everyday

Very well explained Taysideferret......

Oooooh Mark One for me! I dread the day they die. We've got four collars and two boxes and I just pray they go on for a good few years. I can't get on with the Mark 3 at all lol!

I presume that my Deben terrier locators must have been the MK 1s ,simply because I had them such a long time ago. I know that I was gob smacked at the price of new ones when I enquired a year or two ago about replacing them.

What difference have folks noticed between the two models ?

The Mk3's make the most hideous noise lol and I can't do the magnet thing for love nor money    Oh and I still haven't come to terms with the fact that they are great big long bright orange things!

They're only 'plus' imho is that you can leave the batteries in but that is not enough pull to make me trade in the Mk1s

I'm not trading off my Mk1's until I have to either.  I've got three boxes and half a dozen collars and I hope they last as long as I do.  For me to buy that kind of set up in the Mk 3's, I'd have to take out a mortgage on the house.

And I hate the noise they make, too.

Yes, they are digital, but does that automatically make them an improved locator?   I can pinpoint a terrier with my old Deben, so is digital far better?

What do you like about the newer outfit as compared to the old style,  tayside?

I've looked at the orthovox online.  Have you seen them and what do you think of those?

I thought i couldn't/wouldn't get on with the mk3 either. That was until my mk1  died on me and i ended up biting the bullet and bought one, once you remind yourself to switch the locate and search button,it's actually quite a good bit of kit

Yep, I've heard the same from a couple of people we know. They've had to make the change and once they're used to it they say it works well.

I'm a miserable old stick in the mud though and refuse to change until we have to lol!

Well, since the earlier posts, I've been out with a couple of folks who used the Mk3, so I've seen a bit more of it.  I have to admit that it works and works well.  The noise would take some getting used to.
