How do you register and protect a business name.

As usual, my mind is racing ahead. In a few years time, I'm hoping to be producing cider and apple juice that will eventually be for sale to the public. I've already put the cart before the horse to a slight extent and I've been thinking of a company name and some pretty original product names too. My question is, should I register these names in some way? How do I do it? Is it cost effective ? In other words, at this very early stage, is it possible to protect what I come up with ?

dont you register with 'company house' or something?

yep down in cardiff

i'll see if i can find chris's stuff here witht the address and number on it
Pilsbury

and remember to buy the domain names, I have 4 for my mushroom business even though I only use 1 at the moment it means no one can set up a site on an almost identical domain name and use my publicity

I've only just spotted this; so far as product names are concerned I can help you with that aspect as it's my job.  Registration is recommended but only if you are going to use them within the next five years or so.  But you really should get a search carried out first, you don't want to be treading on other people's toes as that can be really expensive.  More cost effective to search and register than not search and get into trouble. Also, you want to be sure that your product names aren't descriptive of cider or apples as you won't be able to protect anything like that, or stop other people using the same name.  Let me know if you want detailed advice in due course and I can do it by pm.

Company names, you are right, straight to Companies House, but company names have no bearing on product names.

I might be a bit oversensitive here, but that kind of implies you think I am touting for business.  I am not. Any advice I give over this forum and to bodger cocerning branding is clearly not part of my business.  It is part of this forum.  I suggested further advice by pm only because if he has product names that he has thought of, he does not want to whole world to see them before making any decisions.

Your being oversensitive.

I was actually pming Pilsbury re oak chippings that bazzer is coming to collect, and pming Bodger re a contact here in Cornwall who is doing the same as he is doing.

I only used the post here, as I am lazy and it was the first one I read this morning........sorry if I 'alarmed' you.
As most folk here who kinda know me, Im not the most computer literate person, and a bit lazy(and they also knowIm a bit direct)

Nothing underhand or talking about you behind your back or anything
bodger

No probs you two.

Sue, I'll no doubt be PMing you. and Lorraine has already sent me an interesting PM thgis morning about some friends who have embarked on a similar but much larger scheme.

I'm so impatient, I can't wait to get going but those trees that I planted last year are still just squibby babies.

Well, the alternative was George Eliot ( I am struggling through Adam Bede), so you know, a girl's got to keep herself occupied.  At work now though (well, lunch of course)
