Hives

a few scouts showing interest in one of my bait hives in the garden could be a swarm coming :-)

and a little fanning goin on in the paddock

kaz

That's interesting - I've always been interested in bees (and ants :-) )
Ratman

Have seen a few bees about jim. Seen 5 queen wasps today as well and spoke to a local pestie who was caled out to deal with a starter nest in a garden shed. The queen had already built the cone and had layed eggs in the cells. Have seen some incredible amounts of mining bees so far this year.
bodger

Thanks for the pictures Jim. How many hives have you got ?
Jim

active hives two 18 ornamental ones im a sucker for a hive type i aint got we need to preserve them as folk are letting the old types rot away ive six to do up in shed when ive a minute.
and ratters ive killed a couple of queen wasps and the starting of a nest in the roses we suffer alot round here by hornets but not seen one yet
storm

You make your own honey then, Jim?
Ratman

Wow just had to pour myself a strong one at the thought of those darling queen wasps being killed before they had chance to build a nest and get ratters phone ringing with a panicking customer on the end. :laughing8:
There is a penalty in my house for anyone killing a queen wasp. They are all trained in the art of catch and release round here ::
Trouble is the neighbours usually end up with nests and being a sucker I do those free of charge anyway. Mind you there is normally a little something delivered soon after (Hic)
Jim

well the bees do i just steal it :-) cut comb this year i think as a chap up the road sells it in jars 1.50 a lb no-one would want mine at 3 a jar
oh and the sortout this weekend will no dought have a few old bee bits for me as it always does more to the collection :-) and the wifes not coming shes working :-)
Ratman

I saw some comb honey yesterday in a shop Jim. the piece was about the size of a soap bar and they were charging 4:50
Jim

i was asked last year to destroy 2 hornets nests in a thatch roof i said no no no no i ate them bleeders frighten me to death suited and booted no way especially not up a ladder you can have next time they ring :-)
cao

I have seen several queen wasps over the last week, but had not seen one before last week.
Does this mean that we are in for a lot of wasps this year or is this normal?
storm

I pay over 3.00 a jar for our local honey. My OH loves it. It is expensive but far superior to supermarket honey.

It is supposed to help people who suffer with hay fever to eat local honey.
Ratman

Trend has been in the past that if the queens are about in numbers early on then the wasp season from a pesties point of view will not be too blistering. Might have to down grade to a BMW this year
Jim

thats correct storm gotta be local to you shop stuff is blended surplus is sold and mixed up together you dont know where it comes from
and ratters a fiver a slice from me but a big slice :-)
cao

Ratman!I think that you have to have the frontall labotomy before you are allowed one of those
Ratman

If you fancy a crack at Willow Park somewhen in the not too distant future I might get you to stick a slice in for me Jim
Ratman

Id rather a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal labotomy cao ::
Jim

ive noticed if wasps are early due to warm conditions they get established then the rains come and put them back again as the rain usually sorts a wasp nest out thats built in the open try it with an hose pipe at night :laughing8:
Ratman

NNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Leave them alone bless them :laughing8: :laughing8: :laughing8:
Jim

im getting hungry a slice of comb on some fresh crusty bread whilst sat on the bankside watching your float slip away to a 6 lb plus tench ah roll on that summer
Ratman

Happy Days Jim

Will be giving Willow Park a bash in a couple of weeks if you fancy a go
will speak to Fish as well to see if he can make it.
Trapper
