Hay for PigsIve just been reading on another forum about people that feed hay and haylage (basically anything grass based) to their pigs does anyone else feed hay.
I was thinking of feeding it to my newly aquired Berkshire crosses through the winter.
How much a day would you feed in addition to their main feeds.

ours get any left over hayledge in their pens. some eat it; some lay on it; some play in it; some ignore it. I don't count it as part of their ration because not all of them eat it.

kune kune's love have as part of their diet the traditional pigs as debbie say play around with it so has little or no value as a feed.
pea straw on the other hand is a good source of winter feed for pigs.

I tried chopped silage on the dry sows. They loved it but it bunged them up quite a lot.

I tossed a round roll of dried hay into my pig pen mainly for bedding. Haven't seen any of them do more than nibble on it but the piglets do seem to like to play on it and dig in it. From what little I know about feeding pigs it seems to me corn tortillas are the food of choice and they are easy on the pocket book.

They'll have a nibble at haylage but thats about it. Ruminants are geared up to deal with forage in bulk with their four stomachs but as we know, pigs aren't ruminants. There'd be a lot of happy farmers if grass could form a large meaningful proportion of the pigs diet but it doesn't. Its just a useful tack on.
