Harvest mites or chiggers

My poor mare has had an attack of these. They bite like a louse and cause oozing sores and inlfamation round the coronet band and pastern. Ive taken her off the grass and hibiscrub and creamed the affected areas. Does anyone have any experience of these? I dont quite know what to do next! Love Lizzie

hi...if its the same as what we came across in Tenessee on a friends farm we had to wash down the lower half of our legs [we'd gone there in 3/4 length shorts] with white spirit.  Patrick called them chiggers and said they burrow into you and the only way to get rid/make sure you were clear of them if you werent wearing trousers was to wash down.

luckily we didnt get bitten but he said they are really nasty!

not sure if you can wash down your horses like that but there may be something out there for it?

hope this helps

My sister's dog is suffering from sores & weeping from paws this week. Vet said he's seen several cases this week although didn't offer a diagnosis.. I'm thinking harvest mites?

I've just read that they are abundant round fruit trees. Their lane is full of wild damson trees.... beginning to add up methinks.

Judging from other research they are particularly bad this year. It could well be what is affecting the dog. my mare is a bit better though i am restricting her field time and spending ages tending to her feet. at least she is more comfortable now. I seem to be spending half my life at the stables! Love Lizzie

That's animals innit? My morning chores are running late because my mare was COVERED with bot eggs (bit late I thought   ) and I've been busy with my fingernails. Now to clean the car boot after a bottle of milk burst in the shopping yesterday.......

One of the doggy sites was suggesting ear canker powder for harvest mites but I should imagine your hibiscrub would do the trick.
conundrum

There is a wonderful product here in Canada, that I put on everything! It is called Fiskes, and one form of it has the main ingrediant of Pine Tar, this has sorted the problem here for me.

Seabird, my horses have been covered in the last week or so with bots, even into there manes....I have spent long time with my bot knife, odd that the things are as prevalent so far apart.
