There's a petition on the go to try and stop Gumtree from selling animals. I hope it works.

What is the main issue 12Bore? Is it the selling on or the "will swap for"? Lots of people in rental are forced to sell pets if their contract is ended because so many landlords won't allow pets. I know when I rented early on it was a nightmare to find somewhere where I could live and keep the dog plus I had the luxery of only needing to please me and a reasonably high rental bracket. Not that I'm condoning it as I think people should do all they can to keep their pets on and this post does sound a bit flippant....

I for one would miss pets being advertised on Gumtree as we have found pets this way and sold pups through Gumtree ads. Gumtree are usually pretty good at clearing inappropriate ads-mine are quickly removed if I dare to mention the labs are from working lines-they don't allow working dogs to be sold for some reason! This one might disappear for that reason.  Also there are so many Facebook sites now where people advertise so it is impossible to keep under control.

The ads that get me are the pups sold at 14-16 weeks or so-the reason being "we've got a baby due any time and we can't give it the attention it needs"-you didn't know the imminent baby was on its way 8 weeks ago when you bought the pup?!?

Ad not there now

I think it's prolly the way I view Gumtree, as a sort of Freecycle with charges.
I tend to view sites like that as "disposal" sites for unwanted stuff and for getting rid of stuff which is (often barely) one step removed from junk. It's one thing to flog off an old washing machine or bicycle, but I just don't think it appropriate for animals.
And as for "...will swap for mobile phone or boots..." that just comes across as uncaringly getting shot of one connodity for another, yes, he may need the boots for a new job, but (to me at least) it debases the whole concept of keeping an animal.

I don't think I dare say what I really think of that kind of thing!
