Garlic

I put my Garlic in 2 weeks ago, and covered with straw, yesterday I noticed green shoots coming through the straw. so I have covered them with more straw to protect them from the frost. Is that the right thing to do?

Do go on! I've never heard of that before!!!
Christine

I don't cover my winter garlic with anything as they need a period of cold and frost to make them grow. I've had a good harvest up here in the northeast even in a snow covered winter.
confused

I planted 3 rows today ,

flipance....I've read the piece put up by you.....and....Ive got to go with Christine on this one....garlic needs the frost and will also bear well to heavy-ish snow....anything like last years snow, I would consider covering it.
Saying that its all down to the individual ......keep us all in touch as to how you fair...it will be interesting to one and all.

Once again welcome to OTG

My garden got abandoned for a few years a while ago.  One of the things which was still going strong, un weeded, untended and unsplit was the garlic. Dug some up whilst green, split the heads in to clove replanted it and off it went - its one of the totally trouble free crops, as long as you dont get white rot of course.
