Foxed last night.

So at about four this morning I woke to the sound of chickens squawking and of bumping around coming from one of my chicken sheds.  The shed in question, is in the nearby orchard which runs almost up to the house. I quickly chucked my dressing gown and wellies on and went with a torch to investigate.
I was met with the sight of two dead chickens on the grass. They were still cavorting around with nerves but they'd had their heads crunched. I didn't actually see the fox, he must have heard me coming.
I'm usually very good at putting my chickens away but last evening I must have forgotten to close just the one pop hole up.

The shed that was attacked contained my four original Anconas and a quick look inside saw two very frightened old hens and of course, there were the two dead ones outside. I must have had these old girls for close on four years, they've done extremely well for me over the years and they've still laid well this season.
Just by chance, I reset my fox trap yesterday and I'll be checking it in a short while but it looks as though this one was after fresher meat.

Just shows they are always about! We have had hens taken in the middle of the day!

Oh no
But as we all know to our cost, all too easily done

I've been on the phone this morning and ordered a new five foot fox trap, it should be here by tomorrow.
Last night, the fox had also found my old trap and had managed to eat half of the bait through the bars without going inside, so this morning, I've cut some gorse and placed it around the baited end to stop him getting at it.
From here on in, that will mean that I have two traps set permanently. At least, thanks to the fox I'll have plenty of bait for both of them.
My two hens will go into the freezer as future bait.

Just goes to show they are waiting and watching every night

Good luck with the trap, think I might invest in one of them

I've gone for the five foot one from 'The Trap Man' It should be here tomorrow and in the meantime, I'm hoping that I might be lucky tonight with my old home made one.

These two were still bouncing about when I found them.

So easy to forget
I now stand at the gate when I have locked them all up and mentaly go through the jobs and make sure I have done them all.
Sign of old age I'm afraid.
Hope your trap works.

The fox had been at my old trap again last night. This morning I could see that it had wormed its way through the gorse and managed another nibble at the bait through the mesh. My new trap should be here some time today, lets see what the blighter makes of it.

Good luck tonight pal
