Fox alert again

We're on 'Fox Alert' again. There was a very strong, very distinct smell of fox in the are of the church hedge and gate between the orchard and poultry pens, this morning. The electric fences have been tested to make sure they are working to maximum capacity, the trap is set and so is the camera. Tonight we will split the 10 older, broody hens who are still free ranging, between the stable pen and shed pen for their safety. Then keep our fingers crossed.

We always have the electric fence set up and lock everything away securely every night and so far we have been lucky. There can be a very strong scent of fox in the fields and they are picked up regularly on the webcam that we have set up.

The camera was Tim's Christmas present from the kids, even though the last thing we need is another fox attack, it would be interesting to catch it on video ( and then the trap )

All birds safely shut in for the night behind electric fencing.

Best of luck Sandra!

I've caught a fox this morning Sandrar and its less than 50yards from my main chicken pens. I'm waiting for my mate Pugh to come and despatch it.
bodger

He was a fourteen and a quarter pound dog fox in very good condition.

Failed to catch the one at the yard, either in the trap or on camera. Brought the camera back home at the weekend and set it facing the field behind the growers pen, a fox made several appearances throughout the night !

In spite of yesterdays success, there were fresh fox prints in the mud this morning.
horace

Good luck to both of you

Not only is the fox patrolling the growers pen at night, we caught a badger on film last night !

I know of people who've had real problems with foxes predating their chickens. They're not adverse to taking the backs of substantial sheds.

!!

I know this might sound a bit mad.... But I have found having a radio on in the night hours (classical being disliked the most IMO), very protective to our flock.

The one time I had it off our cow Daisy met up with a skunk in her stall (which was right next to the chicken coop we had built in said barn)... She played with it a bit and then let it go.... ... One other time a raccoon got one of our ducklings, that was outside the 'protection' area. The only other attack we had was dogs and they are used to humans... And will also attack in broad daylight.

Like the idea of a radio - thanks

I've just reread my last post and I meant to say badgers not foxes.
sandrar

We knew what you meant, just put it down to age
bodger

Thanks Sandrar.
