Flies

I appear to have a growing number of what I call 'fruit flies' at my place of work.........it started with a few last week but the numbers seem to be growing
What are they finding to eat?
I will go and get some fliy spray this lunchtime
Rena

Has there been any fresh fruit lately? We've had them arrive with fresh produce and a few weeks later have a population boom! Usually within an additional few weeks (after any frash produce is gone) they go too.

They *have* to be creative in how they survive! I just don't how they pull it off!

Those little things do drive me crazy! (As if I needed any help! )
bodger

They were an absolute menace when we were cider making a few weeks back. They were intent on taking a header into the apple juice whenever they could.

I went to buy fly spray and they said that they were selling loads of it at the moment.

That'll be my Christmas present sorted then?
hopefullbry

sounds like they are breeding somewhere ,  any old fruit veg/ flowers or foodsuffs ?  you need to find that or you are on a  losing battle, find the source get rid and good deep clean.

Saves using any chems

As Bry has said, there is no need to use flyspray - fruit fly (drosophilla spp) are nearly always a hygiene issue.

How are your drains?  Have you got any stagnent water anywhere?

If in doubt, flush the drains using a suitable 'enzyme' type drain cleaner (anything containing Sodium Hydroxide and Sodium Hypochlorite) and at the very least eliminate them as a possible source of the problem.

I've seen this problem in a food factory where the cleaners used to leave a couple of inches of water in a mop bucket, in a home where the sewer pipe had come apart and there was a build up of foul water in the void under the floor, and most commonly in pubs where they don't clean up properly last thing at night.

Insecticide is not the cure.

Couldn't agree more!! They are not the answer.

(Christmas gift maybe not sorted after all Bodger, eh? )

Sounds like your apples are the culprits!

The flies are 23 miles away in one of karens clinics. We have the groundfloor property but there are three flats immediaetely above.
goodlife

these flies are they smaller than a house fly and do they tend to float rather than fly ?

Until they land in the batch of home-brew you are mixing up, and then the buggers sink.

You'd be surprised at how easily the little dudes find and hitch rides as well as setting up shop upon arrival at *your* destination. (I know, as they have come home with me, from our 'local' grocery store, Many times!-even without any fresh produce having been purchased )
goodlife

just been wondering have any new plants in pots been brought into the house as the Sciarid Fly lays it's eggs in the compost and then when you put it somewhere warm the little buggers hatch
