First 40 Pike of the year !

Grams that is

Not quite the Monster I was after, but it was nicely marked.
This was on the Boyle River. The cool weather we have all had seems to have put the season back by a couple of weeks. No sign of the spawning yet.

I use lure bigger than that Pike

Though I really should behave myself, as I experienced yet another appalling season with many blanks

Nice fish.  We only have a redfin pike here that is about the size of a cigar.  How do you like to prepare them?

When they're that size - 2 number 8 trebles on a 30lb wire trace should do it.........

Yeah, that'd work good.  Our redfin pike are funny.  In big water you can't hardly catch one but if they get stranded in a whale waller after the water dries up in the swamps they are ravenous.  When I find them concentrated like that I like to take an ultralight fishing rod and pop a fly in the water and its swallowed in seconds.  They may be small but with an appetite like that it doesn't take long to catch a mess.  Pretty fun too.

OOOh, dont mention live baits here! You would have the fire and brimstone down on you
I read an article from Des Taylor who came across for the Pike fishing. Talking to the local tackle dealer he asked if Live baits were the best. The dealer went pale and said 'the damnation of hell would fall on you for using lives'. So its deads then? Replyed Des. 'They dont work' came from the dealer. Well what does? The dealer thought about it and with a wry smile.....'nearly deads'!!!!!!!!
Butterbean, dont you have Musky? Or are they more North?

They are north of us.  Don't know the range.  We do have alligator gar that get pretty big.  Most people don't mess with them since they are hard to clean.

On the live bait, its ok here to use with some restrictions.  They crucified me for my ignorance in Florida when I kept some gut hooked fish for tippets on my hook.  Way I saw it the fish was dead and wouldn't mind going on the hook.  The law saw it different and I was supposed to immediiately throw the dead fish in the water.   I had to spend the day in court and it cost me a good bit of money.  I went back a few months later and squared things up on another fishing trip.
