fire lighting?

anyone know any effective techniques to light a fire out in the field,
at the moment im using a nifty lil firelighting tool like this
( http://www.basegear.com/magfirstarto.html )
available from most decent camping stores, which is pretty damn good anyhow whats your fave method
Lloyd

Is this for bushcrafting in the raw, or setting fire to holiday homes? :-)
boohyah

well i guess a bit of wanton caravan destruction is always good but the tool is more suited to bushcrafting hehehe
Lloyd

Birch bark is great kindling then.

actually using beech as fire wood at the moment burns nice and hot with little ash left over have some old canary nests that i use as tinder, is recycled coconut fiber that they use as nest material so rather than chuck em...
Lloyd

Ash logs can be burned green as the moisture level is so low in it.
Cabbagepatch

oh for goodness sake, bung a firelighter in and use a match ::
boohyah

well will have to keep an eye out for a fallen ash when on me travels and give it a try. as for fire lighters they are generally made from some awful petrochemical which is no good in this eco-friendly time we live in. would much rather use old fashioned matches or my magnesium lighter if im out in the woods or on the beach
Lloyd

The magnesium lighter looks good, is it as effective as the ads suggest?
Gary

Matches and a gallon of unleaded.
