Ferret

We have found a ferret. It is now caught , in a cage with (rightly or wrongly) a freshly shot rabbit and water. We have contacted a couple of people locally who shoot/work dogs etc. who are going to ask around. We really do not want to keep it but are happy to hold onto it for a while....what should we do / not do. Advice please.

What you've done so far is fine.

Hi sandrar,as bodger says you've done fine...if you happen to keep cats chuck a handful of cat biscuits in as well and below is a link which may help you,if i were a bit closer i would take it myself...good luck

Thanks for the link I've been googling and reading as much as I can, they do sound fascinating creatures but I don't think I would do it justice by keeping it so if I don't hear from anyone locally in the next week or so will contact the rescue centre.

The downside is I had a broody (earmarked for the turkey eggs) sitting in the straw of the feed store, couldn't work out yesterday why she had left the nest she is usually bonb proof -  guess the ferret was the reason.

if ou get no joy finding the owners let me know i've been looking and trying to turn the wife so if its homeless her in doors will be putty!!

Good stuff sandrar...i have worked and bred ferrets and polecats myself for about 12 years now and one thing i will have to say(and what i was always taught) in the interest of the animal is if you do let it go to anyone else or decide to keep it make sure it has a home where there is at least one more ferret or polecat, they sleep for about half to three quarters of the day but when active are extremely social and always prefer company and not only will the owner get some great entertainment but have the finest rabbit controllers known to man
sandrar

Thanks rustyboy. I hate to keep any creature on its own, they always fair better with their own kind , especially such social animals.

Today will be the third day of finding it. It's condition has improved immensly and it is obviously very tame and used to being handled. If I don't hear from anyone locally today I'll start to look to rehome it as soon as possible.

The ferret has now been added to the national and local data base for missing ferrets. If the owner doesn't claim it soon a collection officer will take it to be rehomed. I'm not sure what sort of time limit they are talking of but it concerns me it is on it's own.

A couple of question

How much feed a day should I be giving it - can they be over fed ?

Although he takes food back to his bed, when I clean it out morning and evening there is none left. He seems to eat as much as I will give him.

He has been having a good  1/2-3/4 hour play/excerise each evening is this enough?

Also he has a tick on his shoulder what's the best course of action?
budgie

all sound good to me as for the tick vaseline the little sucker

Well done sandrar...if the collection officer is in any way clued up about Ferrets/Poly's then they should know what lies in the best interest of the animal, you could always enquire i suppose,Ferrets/poly's are natrual hoarders so the more food that goes in it will only stash it if it has a belly full, they are all different charecters some like to eat where the bowl is whilst some will take it into a corner by themselves and eat it.from my experiences when that stomachs full they tend to do what my Nan does and go to sleep!!generally when i feed the Hob i have who is in his own quarters next to the gills,he will have a couple of handfuls of Cat biscuits in a small bowl if there is no Rabbit but if i have rabbit a full size one will do him for 2-3 days,as for excercise i am fortunate enough to have large aviary type enclosures so they will muck about when they want but your doing fine with what you do,a lot of people wouldnt go as far as you have
