Extracting the urine, suggestions?

No really I am extracting the urine & need suggestions.

So after two years of using a bucket & chucket / composting set up with no urine separation its now time to build two separation units.
I already have two separation seats that I am going to mount under a nice wooden top.

My big question is how will I stop smells from the urine pipe coming back up the pipe?
I did think about using a trap of some sort but that will just fill with urine & then smell. I have also heard that people use a trap but put some oil in it to float on the top of the urine to seal it. It would also be possible to "flush" the unit using a beaker of water but that would rely on people remembering to do so.
I guess we could also use urinal blocks of some sort but they would need to be "green". The green ones I have found are about 3 each inc del.

A layer of mineral oil (castor, etc?) might well work! Sounds as though that would be your best idea?

I've also heard that brewers yeast is used to neutralise odours in seperating tanks, but I'm not sure if it'll work directly in the urine? I have the feeling that the ammonia content would kill the yeast.................

Is it worth collecting it seperately & diluting it to use in the garden? It's perfectly safe on plants if it's spread around a wee bit (sorry, dreadful pun  )

Marvellous for blackcurrants.

Thats is what we are wanting to do. However the pipe from the unit to the storage will smell & smells could come back up the pipe too.

We will be using special urine pipe that is supposed to reduce "salts" build up but want to reduce unwanted smells as much as possible.

I wonder if Apple Cider Vinegar would work?  We've kept many um, 'smells', at bay by using it. (it has to be 'real' as in having the 'mother' in it....not 'flavoured'. )

I guess I could use a spray bottle to mist the bowl with the vinegar after each use.

Plus I know some one that might have a large supply of cider vinegar at some point

Cant you just sloosh it down with water?

That's what I was thinking....but I also like the spritzer idea as it would help keep the 'bowl' clean.

To be honest in my bid to keep it simple (and cheap) that will be the first option. Then if it becomes a problem with smells (not just the urine but drain smells too) I have found a waterless trap that uses a silicone valve that should do the job for about 20 per unit by the time you have got all the adapters & bits.
