Electric and Gas

We changed our gas suppliers last October as we were given a better deal, but couldn't change the electric just then because Eon said we would have to pay 50 to take the stupid money grabbing pre-pay meter out!   But Suthern Electric told us to call back just after xmas and they could change it free of charge (sooooo only got round to calling now!)

It wasn't us who ran up huge bills, it was Pete's ex, then we got the house back after a year before it was repossessed....

Anyway, Pete called today (he's off work till Monday) and at the moment we pay 34-35p a unit on this meter, AND it's an Economy 7 meter which we don't use anyway as the heating is gas.....and they said until they can change the meter, we will now pay 11p a unit! THEN when then meter is taken out (free of charge   ) our electric will go to between 11p a unit and 8.5p a unit...

Hell of a difference there methinks, and we should have done it ages ago! It's one of those things though where you just need a few minutes to sit down and sort out....

If the bill wasn't in Petes name but in his ex's even if he part owned the house he has no obligation to pay the bill at all - you are entitled to a service in your own right and the last supply provider would have had to go after his ex for the money....you would be entitled to a rebate on what you have paid if this is the case.

Oh, we didn't pay what was owed, she had already had the meter put in when we came back, because she had owed so much.... but Eon insisted we had to pay 50 to have it taken out, which I refused to do! sorry, I wasn't clear enough on that bit!

in which case you probably did pay the bill unless you had the pre paid meter cleared of the debt, my sister in law moved into a shared house, she was the first to move in but once the 4 people were in they were paying 40 a week between them and it was only just lasting, I told them it was wrong to be that much and they eventually got the landlords to get an engineer round, he plugged his little black box in and it told him the pre pay meter was loaded with nearly 400 of debt still and it was taking nearly 1.50 per day as debt repayment, turns out the last lot of tenents had run up bill and then cleared off, new landlords took over and had the meter put in but the debt had been put onto it.
the engineer cleared the meter and they soon had loads of credit on it.

Renting is always dangerous when it comes to taking over from someone who has done a runner. And you never know what you are taking over with a house either. Lucky the landlord had sorted out the fact that electricity meter had been hot wired into the flat upstairs (and she went on paying despite her bill trebling in size, dozy blonde).

Had a major argument over gas meter as it was a card pre-payment and I refused to have a card. Said I wasn't a bad debtor at last place and didn't see why I should be forced to pay for someone else's misdemeanours here.

But anyone who tries to understand their bill and compare it with another company always finds that there are minor problems like a charge that will be levied if you move. It's all to do with big business, keeping customers and parting us from our money without our say so.

I just look forward to my bills being halved! I mean, we do what we can to keep costs down, power savers light bulbs, not leaving things on stand-by and all that, and the drier is NEVER on from March until November!! (had to get a drier, the drying clothes in the house were playing hell with my head.... we tried to do without for a winter when the old one died, but to no avail!)
