The sound of the banjos was a bit of a giveaway...
Gareth

Hmm.

I think I'd better quickly disassemble my steam pasturiser and inter cooler set up that I use for purifying my home brew then.
maine moose

Amazing how many folk come up with the same ideas, now that could be good for the taste test whos still makes the best
bodger

Vigo sell a mini still but they have to sell it as an ornament.
Gareth

Here is a link to the report with a couple of photos in yesterday's Eastern daily Press: Customs officers find moonshine still in King’s Lynn

Now that is interesting Gareth, that is a proper still, Mine doubles as a kettle.
I found out how from a library book about chemistry, it was very interesting
as well as distilling it told how to make gun powder & loads of information. Some time later I went to borrow it again but it had been withdrawn.
bodger

When I was at school, there was a school book that showed you how to make fireworks.
Gareth

I have just noticed that the journalist who wrote the article is one of my fishing buddies: Chris Bishop from the Predator fishing group

The only problem is try to buy saltpetre from the chemist
ewal

You know these folk from eastern Europe they all do it . I bet round Boston & Peterborough there are stills a plenty.
redbelly

Yes, I think distilling is very popular in eastern Europe. I once visited a Croatian bloke in a nearby town who ran a still in a side room of his chook house. The still was made from a beer keg, lots of copper tubing and a gas ring. It was fueled with fermented reject over ripe fruit from the market. Apart from drinking a lot himself the gentleman sold a lot in flagons to his friends. He very kindly gave me coke bottle full which I was never game to drink.
In the back yard he also grew tobacco and his son grew some very odd looking plants.
Next door lived a very short sighted or benevolent policeman.

The keg looks to be aluminium, and how would you clean it.

Looks a bit heath robinson to me.

The Keg is Stainless Steel border, my father in law use to be the repair man for them at Whitbreads Brewery. They clean them out with costic soda as far as I can rember.Oh Happy days his works openday, talk about a piss up in a brewery.......

I used to be a drayman for Ruddles in another life.

Rocking those barrells off the lorry onto a cork filled pillow, and then sliding them down  into the cellers of London pubs, was hard work, but it was rewarding in many ways.

We never paid for meals, if the pub owner/manger forgot our lunch, we would give the barrells on the racks a good shaking making the beer cloudy, you could bet they never forgot again.

There was one little pub called the parrot in Soho, we would put a 1/2 barrell on the bar, tap it, and the old buddy that owned the place would sell it, before it had settled, but the regulars seemed to enjoy it.
ewal

Have you tried buying saltpetre from the chemist lately.

When my dad killed pigs during the war he bought it & rubbed it round the knuckles on the shoulders & hams.
gorlan
