Definately a cockerel year for me.

Following on with the theme of my quail being 80% males, I've had similar luck with my chicken hatching this year too. Of the thirty something chicks that I've hatched, at least three quarters of them are cockerels.

The LS are probably worth fattening but not so the Anconas.

How have your hatchings gone?
confused

2 out of 6 eggs hatched , 2 cocks  both destined for the pot , they are just mixed breed , i have never really had any pure breed , i just keep hens as my forefathers did , i buy ex layers at 78 weeks , i pick up the odd ??? what ever's that folk want rid off, and i just hatch a few under a couple of wee bantams , sorry but not really a purist's way of working , but why change the habits of a lifetime , what does not lay goes in the soup pot ,

Most definitely a cock year. I was beginning to despair with the Goldtops as I have several on order but the last few hatches have favoured females so by the end of the season it looks likely it'll even out.

I've been around with a notebook to the various pens of chicks and tallied up.

In total this year I've hatched 34 chicks. 22 cockerels and 12 pullets.

I have 11 Light Sussex cockerels and the same number of Anconas.

I have 8 Ancona pullets and unfortunately, just 4 of my beloved Light Sussex pullets.

In the meantime, things have gone from bad to worse with my quail chicks. In my last update I told you that I had eight cocks and two pullets. Well if you think that was bad enough, I definitely heard one of the pullets crow during the night, so best make that just the one pullet then.
