Cowslips

I have a memory from when I was very young of sitting in a field, picking cowslips and sucking the nectar from the bottom of the flowers.

I'd be shot if I did this today, assuming I could find a field with cowslips in it.

Our local grocer is selling some lovely, healthy looking cowslip plants and I fancy some but at £3.50 a pop, my hands stayed in my deep pockets.

I've now confirmed that cowslips can indeed be given the 'playtex treatment' so I might indulge myself.

They used to be picked in great numbers for making Peggle Wine. The sweetness from the flowers made it a lovely and fondly remembered drink.

Taking the flowers though meant there were so many fewer seeds….and now the plant is very much rarer.

The recipe was for a pint of peggles to a pint of water (usually done by the gallon) as the basis.

Lovely plants, and a pleasure to see in season

They say, "A delicate off-dry wine with subtle floral & honey undertones. Old fashioned & delicious, this wine is great served chilled as an aperitif or with seafood dishes, chicken & summer salads."

I'm now tempted to try it.

I miss seeing them - wonder how many plants I'll need before I can make Peggle Wine....

We have a small winery near us that does country wines - nowhere near the number of varieties yours does!

We have cowslips growing in the lawn and no matter how hard I try to move them to a better place (better for me) they continue to thrive and multiply in their original position  

We also see them planted out on the banks of some dual carriage-ways

I see (or will see soon) cowslips on alot of the grass verges round me and on my way to work, have never drank their nectar though..... I did it alot as a child with sweet nettles though.
