Cotton Reel

Any of you girls remember knitting with a wooden cotton reel that had four pins fixed into it?

Or Cats Cradles?
MrsWW

Yep, remember them both - couldn't guarantee I'd be able to do either now though
Gareth

Ah! the knitting Nancy ..... ..... .... ..... up until about a year ago, I was using one to make necklace cords.
Bazzer

No need to call yourself a Nancy "G". Lots of men knit.
Alice

We used to call it 'french knitting'.

And french 'skipping' with a 'rope' made out of loads of coloured elastic bands all knotted together? Remember that?

I remember the french knitting...could never do it lol!

French skipping...woohoo! Spent hours doing it, all the breaks at school and then after school, and when I had to go in I used two kitchen chairs as people's legs and practised for hours with all the ditties and routines to go with them. Those were the days

LOL In, Out, Side, Side, In, Out and ON! Pretty self explanatory moves

Then there was Nebucannezar (sp) the King of the Jews, bought his wife a pair of shoes, when the shoes began to wear.....

Am desperately trying to remember some other ones. I am old now

Oooh....what about the tennis ball in the sock against the wall....top of your head, over each shoulder, inbetween your legs, under your arms and over your head again...blooming scary at times!

Cat's Cradle too, loved that!

TCx
Alice

'I had a bloater, it was double-jointed, i kissed it and made it disappointed...'

The tennis ball in a stocking had a rhyme all of it's own but I'm blowed if I can remember it
hiho9

i use one now to braid para cord....

and i ain't that old
sheffy

I remember all skipping in a row with two people holding the ends of a washing line:
All in together, girls,
Never mind the weather girls
When we call your birthday
Please jump in.
January
February......
etc.
self explanatory. The idea was to get through the whole year without the rope getting stopped.

Talking of cotton reels, did anyone else make tanks out of them. Cutting notches around the rim, and winding an elastic band through the middle anchored by two matchsticks and lubricated with a bit of candle? Not a good description but if you ever made one you'd know what I mean.
Bazzer

Yep. They worked well too.
horace

They certainly did
Hawkeye

ever make one with two reels and biro to hold them together.
Yes i used a knitting nancy as well
Bazzer

Didn't have Biros, wouldn't work with a quill so used a lolly stick.
pads4pets

when I saw cotton reel, first thing that came to mind was a tank. Doesthis mean I'm showing my age

Oh god now there's a blast of a memory from the past!
Eschra

I remember being taught at school how to make tanks with cotton reels - probably not be the teacher, but the empty reels in sewing always found homes with us kids.

Never got the hang of knitting even by this method.

Now skipping rhymes, try these (found the first on a home schooling website and it jogged my memory hence the instructions as well:

'Chocolate cake, when you bake,
How many minutes will you take?
One, two, three, four.'

On ONE: jump up and land with left foot outside the elastic loop and your right foot inside.
On TWO: jump up and land with both feet together inside the elastic loop.
On THREE: jump up and land with both feet outside the elastic loop.
On Four: jump up and land sideways to the elastic, with your left foot on top of the back elastic and your right foot ahead (in front) of the front elastic.

then there was:
Peaches in the parlour,
Apples on the shelf,
[name] is getting tired,
Skipping by his/her self /themselves.
How many times did he/she/ they skip...
One, Two, Three....

Teddy bear, teddy bear, turn around,
Teddy bear, teddy bear, touch the ground.
Teddy bear, teddy bear, show your shoe,
Teddy bear, teddy bear, that will do.
Teddy bear, teddy bear, go upstairs,
Teddy bear, teddy bear, say your prayers.
Teddy bear, teddy bear, turn out the lights,
Teddy bear, teddy bear, say good night!

I like coffee, I like tea,
I like the boys and the boys like me.
Yes, no, maybe so.
Yes, no, maybe so!

I had a little puppy, his name was Tiny Tim,
I put him in the bathtub to see if he could swim.
He drank all the water, he ate a bar of soap,
the next thing you know he had a bubble in his throat.
In came the doctor (at which point another skipper jumps into line)
in came the nurse (another person in!)
in came the lady with the alligator purse (and another).
Out went the doctor (the person jumps out)
out went the nurse (and another jumps out)
out went the lady with the alligator purse! (that person jumps out too)

My mother said,
I never should,
Play with the gypsies in the wood,
If I did,
She would say,
"Naughty girl to disobey".
(couldn't  remember the ending though I found it on a website...)
Your hair won't curl,
your shoes won't shine,
you naughty litle girl
you shan't be mine!
