Coppicing willow?

We've got half a dozen ten to twelve year old willows that we are looking to coppice. What do you do? Do you just cut them pretty close to the ground and let nature do the rest, or is there something else that you need to do?

We used to cut about a foot above ground. Thats it really

If you have a lot of rabbits about cut them a couple of feet above ground. The bunnies love willow shoots and will scoff the lot. Otherwise cut them back as hard as you like and you'll be amazed at the new growth in the spring.

You will find it will grow back wherever you cut it, but as said a foot or so above ground will stop rabbits getting at it, hope you dont have deer near you though lol.
