When I was at Infant School, way back in the 60's, my dad took me to Holmfirth for a day out and there was a clog maker.  My dad bought me a pair of blue leather lace up ones.

Next day (as you do) I went to school in them, only to be sent home with a note from the Headmistress saying that if we couldn't afford proper shoes, I would be allowd to wear my slippers!!
