Chiang Khan on Mekong River Thailand

Spent last weekend in this pretty old town . The Mekong river is about 500 to 600 metres wide and is the border between Thailand and Laos.
There are two types of big carp in the river. One grows to 1.5 metres and the other grows to 3 metres the same as the big catfish lurking in there.
I spent an enjoyable time watching a fisherman paddling his boat near the river bank checking his fish traps.

Scottie

How many of them were ladyboys?
welshboy

Scottie - I am not sure how big a sample is needed in order to check them Crocodile Dundee style to answer your question.

That's unfair Scottie. On the whole, the Thai are a beautiful and friendly people and tarring them with the same brush as the exhibitionists in Bankok is way off the mark.

Nice pictures Welshboy - how long were you out there for?

Are the 'ladyboys' only in Bankok Jonty?
I know that with the recent publicity and documentaries shown over here it is understandable that it is the first thought that comes to mind.

A neighbour of ours has an import bussness over there (he brings in some crazy things that sell real well here ) not in Bankok and he says they are in most big places but no different to things here with such like things. He employs people here and there and says they are loverly people and very friendly over there.
welshboy

Kaz- I am still here and do not plan coming back to the UK until Easter.
Jonty is right - most Thais are very friendly nice people.
I am no George Clooney but even I get chatted up ( I think that because it does my ego a power of good ) regularly and when I go on my daily hours walk get an offer of a lift from a different Thai woman about once a week .
Reality is I am not chatted up they are just friendly pleasant nice people with a beaming smile.
Couple more pics of Sukhothai which is a world heritage site and was the capital of Thailand in the 1200- 1400 era.
Amazing how they built environmentally sustainable cooling systems by building a palace /temple on an island surrounded by water so a cooling breeze is generated. The carp eat the mosquito larvae also.

Nope, I've seen them on the Bangla Road in Patong too.  They are only in the centres where they can make money in shows etc.

Programmes sucu as the only way is Essex could create similar generalisations about the inhabitants of Colchester.............

Welshboy, you're a very lucky man being able to spend so much time over there, it is such a beautiful coountry and the people are some of the friendliest I've encountered.

Are you travelling around the entire country or sticking to  a specific area?
welshboy

Jonty - I have a base but travel quite a bit.
Ratchapuri, Hua Hin, Bangkok, Chiang Khan, Nakon Sawan Chiang Mai
Loei. The drive from Phitsanulok to Loei was beautiful but the road to Chiang Khan was stunning.
chickenstu

looks like a great trip
