Changes in the coarse fishing bye laws.

These changes are well worth having a look at, especially the measures that are going to be introduced in an attempt to help our ever diminishing eel population.
I don't think that the plumet in their numbers has anything to do with anglers but I suppose that every bit helps.

The Eel problem has been caused purely by the exploitation by netsmen and restaurants of the high price people are prepared to pay for Elvers. You cannot remove hundreds of thousands of young every year without making a major impact on numbers.

The Louisiana BP oil spill is perilous close (geographically speaking) to the breeding grounds of Eels, no-doubt over the coming years it will have a marked affect upon the breeding success of Eels and other species.

The new angling by-laws are long over due and welcomed by anglers here in East Anglia, as the local fish stocks have been decimated by the immigrant population removing fish for the pot. This has not been helped by certain locals in the Norfolk & Suffolk Broads setting lines and nets to illegally supply large quantities of freshwater fish to the immigrants, and the Broads Authority not actively pursuing the issue due to the real threat of violence when confronting the netsman. There have been a few prosecutions, but not nearly enough to make any difference.

The Eel story is pretty much the same here. Over fishing has seen most of them off. At one time you could usually get a few on worm over chopped worm if you were struggling. Prominent fishermen in the popular Angling press are not much help either. Nevil Fickling (a Zoologist) stating he only sells Eels from sustainable stock!
Bodger, have you had a crack at those big Eels in Bala? They run to 4kg +
