cat advice needed

as you know one of my cats came in few weeks back and she had cuts and bites near her ears .we were not sure and still arnt if she mated .few days after that she lost her coller.
i got her a new one this collar was a fabric collar i put it on her and made sure that i could run my finger around the whole collar so i know dam sure that the collar was not tight.
today she came in and i noticed a bald patch just below the collar line .i took the collar off and she has a ring of scabs were her collor has been.and quite a bit of fur has gone.
now i know for sure that the collar was not tight around her neck.
my questions are

any one else had a problem like this?
could she be allergic to it?
anyone know why?

i should also point out that the rest of her coat is in perfect condition.

im going to take her to the vets tomorrow as something is not right.
Gareth

Is it a synthetic fabric collar.

Sometimes the extrusion release agents from manufacturing are not fully removed from the fibres before weaving.

The chemicals that the extusion agents are made from can be very irritating on skin.
NZPOME

Like Gareth said, possible an allergic reaction to the collar. It wasn't a flea collar was it?
Baggy

no it wasnt a flea collar. it was a synthetic fabric collar.
i have never came across anythink like it.i have take the collar off her now my greatest worry is someone thinks i hurt and take her to  vet there selfs.as it does look alful.
NZPOME

Hey, now stop yer worrying! She'll be fine, you're taking her to the vets & she looks fine you say other wise.

The fur will grow back, try a leather collar though next time, highly unlikely she'll get a reaction to one of those.

Let us know what the vet says. Boy animals are a worry aren't they?  rolleyes.gif

My "little voice"  mumbled something about autoimmune disorder, I also thought this was quite a helpful article,  hope Gareth is correct, I know cat's can be very sensitive, let us know how you get on .
conundrum

I hope puddy is ok. But why does sse have to wear a collar, they are really lethal things even if they are "loose" they can catch on tree branches etc and choke the cat.
alpha

i hope it is an allergy and the hair grows back quickly.
Or else stop abusing that pussy :q28:  oh.gif

i always get the collars that if ever she did get caught by her collar the clasp would come undone.
The reason she has to wear a collar is there is a lot of kids round my way who take cats with no collars home because they think that they are stray.
unfortunatly i no longer live in the the country i live in a town.

this is my cat

conundrum

She is beautiful, and unusual with the tortie as a minimal to her black, although I do understand you feelings about her being taken, I would still not put a collar on a cat.
lilwitedogs

Oh, I think calicos are so pretty!  She is beautiful, Baggy.

Did all this clear up before you got the new collar?

If the bald patch appeared after the collar was put on then the chances are it was at fault.  The vet will roughly follow process below:

Ascertain if the first incident had cleared before this neck hair loss-to discover if they are linked.

Check for and probably treat for the most common things-fleas or ear mites cause hair loss in cats through scratching/over grooming.  Common things are common.

Once all this is covered will likely advise you to remove the collar and may well supply antibiotics +/- an anti-inflammatory (either injection or cream to apply-probably the first as cats don't like creams!)

Then see how it goes...

Chances are it is the new collar causing irritation.  Don't woory about it being too tight-collars which are too loose are the main problems with cats for getting caught.  Personally I'd go for a microchip and no collar any day.

spoke to the vet this morning we have appointment at 1230 .
she rekons from the sound of it it could be a flea allergy.
we will find out .they are due the flea treatment so am going to take both cats.
will let you know how i do.

this is peppers sister willow.
Baggy

62 pounds later it turns out that the bite what occured in her ear spread a infection.she now has cream, pills and wormer tablets .she is on these for five days then we have to take her back.
she was mated and the kittens what the vet thinks is 2-4 is due the end of feb.
on the one hand i am really glad she is pregnant on the other im worried sick as it my first ever litter of kittens oh.gif
lilwitedogs

Kittens are easy compared to pups.  You'll do fine, don't worry.
Bex

Don't worry about the kittens as the mum cat will do all that is necessary
Baggy

hope so .
i just hope she dosnt have them else where other than in our house.we have a back lobby with a huge cubored under the stair what we have cleaned out and when the kittens are born that room can be shut off so she can be in there with out any interference
ive never seen cats be born and hope i dint miss the birth .
its my first ever cat pregnancy so a total novice at it.
Seabird

What beautiful cats Baggy! I bet you have the same problem as me with white fur on black clothes!

A little feral cat from the farm up the road, had a litter of kittens under a bramble hedge at my place. We managed to get the kittens without getting too scratched and enticed her into the house, where we'd made a little nursery in the kitchen out of a large cardboard box. Unfortunately 2 of the 3 kittens were deformed and died (too inbred probably) but the remaining one grew to be a magnificent cat and was rehomed with my sister.

The little mother cat was easily housetrained but it took months before she would let me touch her. She's totally domesticated now though and enjoys being 'housecat' although she's a fiendish mouser.

I don't think you'll have any problem Baggy. Just make sure you handle the kittens to get them used to humans and you'll have no problems finding them homes.
Baggy

have a huge problem with that one.

peps went back to the vet yesterday and although the wounds have healed they havnt healed as much as the vet would like.
one of the things she first thought it was ,was like a ringworm infection but if that was the case willlow would have got it and so would we.
she also had a feel of the kittens ,aparently for the amount of weeks they havnt grown much and they were high up in her.at first she thought the pepper had absorbed them(never even knew cats could do this)
so we have to go back  on dinner time on wednesday for check,i am also taken willow with me and she will get checked over and if all is well she will get spayed as i certainly do not want two litters of kittens running about.
not only that i have two male cats who stay out side the kitchen window  calling all night
green man

Good luck with it all , and have that camera on standby in case you catch the delivery, just a thought -could the hair loss be hormone related due to the pregnancy?
kimbo

hormonal hairloss

i would say it is certainly a possibility im pregnant and sufffering from hairloss and bad skin  ::  :: .In all serious though my sisters cats suffered a similiar reaction and although the vets were never quite sure what caused it they were pretty sure it was just a reaction to something outside the cat had crawled under ie a hedge and she was treated with cream and a antihistamine which cleared it up. Good luck with the kittens im sure both you and the mother will be fine.

im having the camara and the camcorder on the ready.

no it couldnt be.
from what the vet said the wounds are wet which would indicate a infection in them.
apart from the ring worm theory  her other is that when the male cat bit peps on her ears and neck peps whould have scratched  her neck turning her coller spreading the infection.
boverygal

Hi, when you say " I don't know if she has been mated" does this mean that she has not been spayed? If not she will take some stick from male cats when she is in season untill she conceives.

Collars are definately lethal.
One of our cats once caught himself on a  fence with his collar !
Very distressing ! Luckily I was able to climb up and rescue him.
- the collar went straight in the bin !

the collers i get are ones that if caught they will snap.
there are quite a few cats round here .which is why i put collers on mine

Sorry i forgot about this thread.
for a update.

as from the previus post pepper was pregnant.she would have been due around march the 5th.
on the 7th we took her to the vets to see what was going on .
she absorbed the kittens.
so the vet says cats can do this if they were stressed or there body wasnt ready .
three trips to the vets didnt help due to the infection around her neck.
on the last visit to the vet when she checked her out she said that the kittens hadnt grown which is when she thinks that tshe started to absorb.

after having a long chat to the vet there is no reason why she couldnt go on and hve a litter infact the vet said due to the antibiotics her immune system  should be 100 per cent .so the next time should be fine.

so we have decided to let her try.again she came into season the beginning of april and she mated around the 4th so hopefully around about the 5th june she will have kitten.

if however she absorbs them again we are going to get her done.
kaz

At least you will all be better prepared this time around.
Will you have her done after she has had this litter?
Baggy

yes we will have her done  asap after her litter.
and the kittens willl also be done once they are old enough.
Viva

Sorry if someone's mentioned this already, but I've notice that some cat collars still have permethrin in them and this is poisonous to some cats.  As is Jeyes fluid, Dettol and other any other substance that makes a disinfectant cloudy.

I hope puss is better soon.  Is she neutered by the way, I don't think they'd be mated if they are done, not unless it's the similar case to the Seal and the King Penguin  :smt103 ?

our 2 lads were chilled

These are our 2 bundles had them since they were 7 weeks old
