candling eggs

a bit of a newbie question ! i have just set a dozen banty eggs under a broody, should they be candled after 7/10 days as per using an incy? if so is it best done a few at a time "over a couple of days and marking the candled eggs  " or all on the same night ? she is sitting well but i dont want to risk stopping her brooding

Best done once between 7/10 days then leave her alone. Do it quick and quite with your hand between the hen and the egg stops that quick peck which always breaks the shell. Good luck

Just to add, I've always done it after dark and my hens have always handled it really well. I talk quietly and softly as I do so.

what would you do ,take 1/2 away to candle and then the other 1/2 on returning the first under the broody?
Rena

How far away is the nest from where you'll be candling? I had a high powered torch that I used, so candled right at the nest.

hi rena about 10 feet from the nearest socket for the candler ! another option was to do it when she came out for a feed ,i could close the pop hole on the coop to the run and candle them in the garage about 10 feet away !( i have a store room in there with total darkness so anytime is possible .its all soooo new to me

I've never been to comfortable with removing the eggs to a distance from the nest, esp that early in development. Seems they are pretty fragile to temp changes. (eg: they could be set and growing, but the temp change could cause problems).

Maybe you could try placing a hot water bottle under a towel, nest up the towel a bit, and snuggle them in, covering well? . Also depends on your temps. If it's cold.... I'm not sure I'd venture it.

Someone else might have a better idea or method, as I haven't ever taken eggs from the nest to a different location for candling.

done them this morning at 10 days  and it looks like i have 11 of the 12 fertile " it would have been 12 but for a classic newbie error ,"i had to usher her out this morning so i could lift the nest box up to take into the garage to candle them " and she had one tucked under her wing ! she dropped it in the run but it was cracked and she then started to peck it a couple of times before she went to the feed ! to say im gutted is an understatement    i will certainly remember that one!. she went back to them ok and has come out again this afternoon for a drink and some snap and is sitting fine ! plus the  stags have shown they have lead in their pencils

Woot!!!

Great news on the fertility rate! (...I've done the 'missed egg under the wing' thing as well... ... 'gutted' is a right proper description.)

Not too long and you'll have cute peeps running around! Please post pics if you can, chicks are so adorable! Especially when the hen calls... Or when you see their little heads sticking out between mamas feathers! So exciting!
