Butterflies

This year I thought the butterflies were never going to arrive but today the buddleia is absolutely covered. I counted at least 7 different varieties. There were also honey bees and bumble bees and even a dragonfly.

Digindeep

Brilliant...

Whenever I finally find my Camera.........................they are gone.......
Well done........
bodger

We're getting quite a few varieties now too. There have been some peacocks around this last couple of weeks.

We're getting quite a few varieties now too. There have been some peacocks around this last couple of weeks.

I've just been watering the chickens and I've seen an amazingly brightly coloured little bumble bee feeding on one of the big thistles that we leave for the insects. It had a black body with a vivid orange bottom.

Its a great time of the year for seeing some of the many species of bumblebees that we have. I was going to make a separate post about them. and see if  anyone fancies seeing how many different ones we can take pictures of and to also try and name the species too. Its just a thought, so whose up for giving it a go?
sandrar

I'll give it a go. Like today though I'll probably have many shots of flowers just after the insect has flown.

Today's attempt ...too blurred to indentify

bodger

This might be of help to us.

Looking at some of those images I think I may need a lot more practice.

There was a huge bee in the garden today..tomorrow I'll try to photograph it.
Digindeep

Best one I could find.
Digindeep

Anybody recognise this one, about 1.5 inch long, crawling across the path yesterday afternoon, after landing on my head.

How about a joint butterfly, bee and caterpillar thread?

You prolly know these already, but I just used this guide to id a bee in the garden, we've not had red tailed bumbles before, the lack of stripes confused me. Apparently she was a queen.

Nice and simple. Thank you.

I'm finding bees very hard to photograph...I've plenty of blurred shots of flowers though

Scottie

You are all so lucky to get all these different butterflies.  The only ones I have seen down here is the Cabbage White
sandrar

Devon is usually very mild and a couple of years ago I planted a butterfly / bee border which appears to have worked.

I've found the best plants of all as a food supply for the smaller butterflies are flowering herbs, especially marjoram.
Digindeep

Heck,,,,Sandrar....your dining better than the rest of us....
sandrar

Struggling to ID your caterpillar..possibly from the 'white' group ?
