Best time of day for photos?

I read in a book that the best time of day for photos is either in the morning or evening for the light.  I went to a garden the other day and took loads of photos, but most of them just looked all flat  :-? .  It's difficult to get to these places other than during the day, so is there a way round this?

Light, there you have the point where the science, art and magic of photography meet!
Quite simply there is no best time guranteed to happen every day, some days have no good light, others will be best in the middle of the day but I guess on balance you are more likley to get the best at low sun angles. That said it also depends on what you are shooting. Learning to spot the good light and know when it isnt going to work is about the most important bit of outdoor photography and somthing that will come with practice! If its close ups of plants and flowers and the like you are taking fire off the flash even in the middle if the day, it will tend to lift things a bit and can rescue a shot from the flattest of light

I'll try that thanks!  I can see when it is good light, just a shame when you visit places and they come out all boring  rolleyes.gif

Yep, but I suppose the flip side would be if every shot had fantasic lighting that'd be boring as well!
Tricks when out and about on a flat light day, if there are clouds about keep an eye open, you can sometimes get a moment or two of good light as one drifts across the sun or somthing. If its just all blue or (more likely this summer!) horizon to horizon flat grey then start investingating different angles and use the shadows to make the photo stand out from the ordinary.
