Best pick up advice.

I have finally persuaded OH that we NEED a 4x4 pickup. My question is what to choose??? Ford ranger,Nissan or Mitzy??? Any other suggestions. I really don't want a defender as I don't have a tame mechanic to follow me round!! We have about 5k to spend. It waill be used to pull a 2 horse trailer and haul logs. Thanks - its a bit of a minefield out there!
Slipster

I have had an 05  Crew cab Ranger that pulled really well and was very comfy with full leather Air Con etc BUT it needed a service at every 6k and did an average of 20 mpg (if I was lucky) Then after two and half years from new I did over 90k miles and sold it. I purchased an 03 plate ISUZU crew cab, that I still have and will keep for a while longer yet, the down side is it has never pulled that well and only does around 20mpg But from purchase it has cost me tyres and nothing else other than MOT etc. If I had 5k to spend again then it would be on an 07 plate Ranger these have the uprated engine and are looooooods better. Cant comment on anything else.

vauxhall

My friend has a vauxhall truck I think, anyway I have always had truck envy until he borrowed my twin wheel trailer and he could not back it into a space.  I have been backing trailers for as long as I can remember so I jumped at the chance to have a go in his man truck.  WELL.. you cant see the low trailers or the back (its a 14 ft long trailer).  I had to stick a flag on it so I could see where it was.

Short story, check you can see out the back.  My Discovery is a dream to drive its old 300tdi solid engine, parts are cheap and you can replace any panel or outrigger when they finally rot. I paid a little over 1000 for it and I dont mind jumping in with wellies on.  watch the diff lock works though they stick.  Another thread on how to fix it the easy way if anyone is interested.
flipance

When I was in the UK I had a Mazda 2500, (same as a ranger). I was happy with it but when towing it went down to 17 mpg.
Here I have a 5.7lt Chevy 4x4. I only use it when I have to.
Border

I have all had Toyota hilux's, mitz's l200's. and land rovers, after my last LR I went Jap and have never gone back.

When the time comes for me to change out the l200 I have now, I will buy a 3l hilux. The 2.5l did not really have the pulling power for the 3000kg trailer it had to pull.

I have test drived a new 2013 3l hilux and was very pleased with its performance and comfort.

Keep away from ex-farm motors as farmers are generally animals with their motors.

Walk into a bar, open your wallet...

Usually works!

After a brief flirtation with a Mazda I've gone back to a Defender. Reasons being if the LR goes wrong I can fix it myself. I can get parts for it easily and cheaply and it will pull anything I need it to. The Mazda had trouble getting itself up hills, never mind a trailer.

I agree

We have older Mitzy L200s petrol and diesel 2wd and 4wd I like the petrol myself do tow tandem trailers with up to 3tonne ok but not the cheapest to run. One reason we like is easy to fix

Border here the late model diesel Toyota etc  have the common rail motor that cost alot in sevicing and any water that get through blows the motor (This from head mechanic at Toyota agents) I think other makes have gone the same way
