Automatic carsHello. We have just inherited a new car!!! Well its 12 years old and belonged to a 90 year old lady who decided it was time to hang up her driving gloves! Its only done 25k and apart from a slight smell of mint imperials is lovely! Thing is its an automatic and I was wondering if you can tow with them??? OH says no but our neighbour says you can. I cant find any info either way...so I thought someone on here was bound to know. Thanks, love Lizzie

Go on, tow with it; it's towing an automatic car where you can get trouble!

depends what sort of car it is lizzy, One of ours is an automatic, it tows every day, but its a vehicle designed to toe.
Fuel consumption tends to be higher than what it is on a manual, and we go thru 2 sets of breaks a year
I wouldnt imagine youd go thru them that quick but they do tend to ware thru quicker than on a manual..

Depends on what the CC is and what you intend to tow as with all vehicles!

Its a Renault Megane 1.6 and it would be towing an aluminium 2 wheeled trailer weighing max 6ookg. Thanks, Lizzie

Some automatics benefit from additional gearbox cooling when towing to stop overheating.
It's worth checking with these people:

Good link. will be very useful.
LOL some one has messed up the disco V8 stats, 1000kg tow weight & FOUR cylinders. Its on all the V8 petrols. Plus they have some at 4000kg which is sort of true but you need active linked brakes not over run ones.

Cheers everyone - I'm glad it can have a towbar fitted. Saves OH pinching my car!!! Isnt it odd driving an automatic - my clutch foot goes all peculiar at road junctions. I prefer my manual gears- at least I have somewhere to rest my left hand! Love Lizzie
