Armed and ready to go.

Last week I bought a double Magpie Larson trap for forty seven quid delivered. Ten minutes ago, a local keeper dropped me off a Judas bird to put in it and consequently, my trap is now armed and ready to go.

We have loads of the black and white menace around the place right now and although I've had eggs in my new trap and a plastic decoy vicinity, I haven't been able to catch that first vital bird. Now I have that vital last ingredient, I'm sure it wont be long before I have my first catch.
sod

All the best hate them here as they kill off all the other birds and native have no chance
bodger

That's the problem here too sod. They work every hedge methodically in the nesting season.
Its raining here that heavily at the moment, that I've added to the shelter provided by this shop bought trap. I've got to make every effort to keep at least one magpie healthy.
horace

Good luck hope your efforts work out

It hasn't taken long. I bagged the first one this afternoon. and there's plenty more where he came from.

That Larson trap will be the gift that keeps on giving

We use them up the shoot, it's amazing how many you can get.

I've got a very good chance of a fox in the fox trap tonight Dave.
Dave C

We had our first day shooting the main drives on our shoot 2 Saturdays ago.

On the second drive 2 foxes ran out sending the partridges all over the place
We shot 1 fox and 1 escaped.

That was the 19 fox we have shot up there since February.
Most years we average about 8

Hope you get him
bodger

No fox this morning but I've just caught magpie number five.

The fox was at the bait last night but rather than going in for it, he's somehow getting the bait to the side of the trap and gnawing it through the mesh. This afternoon, I'll be cutting some gorse to deter him from the practice.
Dave C

Could you put finer mesh round it ?
bodger

I may have to but the gorse sometimes works.
bodger

Magpie number six has just dropped in but no fox as of yet.

A friend lost all his Leghorn pullets yesterday to a young fox

My eldest lad is home for a week and he's going to make me a new fox trap. On Monday, we're going to fetch some angle iron and he's got a new welder to play with.
That's six maggies in less than a week and there's still plenty more knocking about. It just shows what a population we have.

Thankfully - touchwood magpies aren't a problem.

Double touchwood   we've had no further sightings of 'our' fox. The trap is permanently set, however and all pens are now electrified.

I picked up a replacement magpie this evening, so we're off and running again.
