Ants

We have noticed ants on the bottom board of our hive, they weren't there last Thursday when we did a full inspection. Anyone had any experience of this and how do you deter the ants
Gareth

It just so happens that at this very moment one of my bee keeping mentors (of 40+ years experience) is here having a cuppa with me before he begins working on one of his wood projects with my help and kit.

Keith has said to either sprinkle a little cinnamon on and around the base board, or to put a few sprigs of either Peppermint or Spearmint on top of the frames. None of these deter or affect the bees, but the ants don't like them.

On a side note, my other Bee keeping mentor is John Everett of Applebees Orchard and Apiary. He is the resident professional bee keeper featured on the BBC TV series The Wonder of Bees with Martha Kearney currently being aired on BBC4

Thanks I will try the mint as I have loads. Just on top of the brood frames or the super also?
Gareth

According to Keith (who was using the mitre chop saw and still has all of his fingers intact after being shouted to by me), to deter the ants it is best to put the Peppermint or Spearmint sprigs on both the brood and super frames. You may need to do this weekly for 2 or 3 weeks until the Ants have got the message.

Thanks Gareth, off out to do it now
