Antelope Hunt 2010

Here is a nice Pronghorn Buck taken with a bow @ 62 yards.  Man these bugger are fast, 0 - 60 mph in a split second, from 30 yards to 500 yards is less than 5 seconds.  Beutiful day, no clouds, limited wind, 60 degrees and plenty of good fellewship hunting with freinds.  Of course I missed several Pronghorn and even had a misfire related to anxiety of getting to shot at a pronghorn. So, after serveral attemps I finally got this buck.  Shot placement wasn't that good at first sight and thought, so I renocked another arrow for a second shot.  Then he staggered and I know I had him.  After a close inspection of him we noticed that my arrow went through in front of the shoulders and nicked the jugular vein and carrioid artery.  Figured an artery was nicked, blood spray was all the site where he went down.  Interesting first hunt for Pronghorn.  Have eatten some now and not a bad tasting animal.  You must have a pallet for Sage flavor though- main diet for Pronghorn.

Well shot! We aren't allowed to bow hunt this side of pond but it's good to see it still goes on where permitted! What bow did you use?
Have just added a Mission Craze to the bow collection, impressive bit of design, I can shoot it at 29"draw and 70lb then within a few minutes have the very same bow set for the kids at 19" draw and 15lb! Plus can see a whole lot of places on a field archery shoot where its very compact size is going to be a huge help!

very nice bow

Shame we are not allowed to hunt with a bow here, mind you I have been told we can vermin control with one (need to look into that)

Nope not allowed to kill any wild animal with bow or crossbow:

http://www.jncc.gov.uk/page-3614#download

Thats the Wildlife and Countryside act 1981, chapter 69, the relevant bit is:

11.-(1)Subject to the provisions of this Part, if any person-
...

(b) uses for the purposes of killing of taking any wild animal
any self-locking snare, whether or not of such nature or so
placed as aforesaid, any bow or crossbow or any explosive
other than ammunition for a firearm ; or

...

he shall be guilty of an offence.

Bits of the 1991 Deer act make it illegal to take deer with (if I remember it right) "arrows, spears or similar.."  as well.

We can use bows and crossbows here I would love to have a go with one

A fantastic post FA and what a bow I've got a cross bow that I used to use to "kill" big bales in the yard

I remember missing once and the bolt went through the zinc sheeting and came out of the back of the shed and hit the rock face

I can't use it anymore and it is stripped down ready to be rebuilt so I will eventually get around to selling it

Go for it! Even field target and 3D target is addictive!

Good shot.  How did you get that close.  Everyone I ever saw was already on the next hill mooning me.

Since I have a freind that lives in Wy. it was all setup for me when I got there to hunt.  This part of Wy. is know for it's methane wells and holding tanks.  During the year workers go out and either service or drain the holding tanks. The Pronghorns get use to people driving in and out of these areas, so when we hunted we emulated the workers style by parking by the well holding tanks and did spot and stock technique.  Of course several bucks caught on to this and we also got mooned from a distance.  It was different listening to them talk since I'm use to hunting deer.  But this was a very good hunt for me.

Here is the doe I also harvested about an hour after I took the buck.

Are you gonna make some sausage?
FABrown2

yes, we made a breakfest style  sausage that is out of this world, on the second batch we added some peppers to give it some kick, and it kicks you alot, but I just can't get enough of it.

Planning on another quest for next year, have to apply for a permit  and get drawn for it.

Sage and peppery!!! That sounds a fantastic sausage!
Butterbean

And every bite has a fond memory.
