An absolute disgrace !

We've all known this has been going on for ages now but whose to blame? The supermarkets or us the consumers ?
With millions in the world struggling to get enough food to survive, the word 'disgrace' isn't really enough to describe what our society is doing when it comes to food wastage. I feel both angry and ashamed.

Having seen this happening first hand I can say the buck stops with the supermarkets their buyers will walk the fields and condem a whole field because they don't think the size is right, the colour is not right etc etc any excuse to push the farmers price down and the consumers up. It been happening for years .. we have eaten very well on supermarket rejects as have the livestock !!.

Not defending it but when Gorbachov visited an American Supermarket he stood in awe at the logistics of distribution from field to shelf. In Russia at that time food rotted in the fields  because their logistics were not up to scratch.
bodger

Yes but as you say, our logistic are, so that surely makes it more of a crime.

There was an absolutely fascinating programme on bbc (i think ) last weekend about supermarkets. Did anybody see it or is it on catch up tv ?
Showed Sainsbury buyers for pumpkins -fields of them then ripening in a huge glasshouse type building. Also developing a black chicken new breed - a really good programme.

Missed that one.

Pity you missed it Bodger - showed a new orchard with the trees trained to grow east west so facing south so the fruit was in full sun. The way the fruit was tested for the supermarket was to cut it in half and dip the cut bit into an iodine solution. If is was black it was not ready if it was mottled then the starch was converting to sugars so ready.
