Air Traffic Protestors

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6943549.stm

We might dismiss these protestors as hairy smelly cranks but as someone who has enjoyed three trips to America for hunting, fishing and meeting my best mate, deep down I know that they are right.

At the end of the day , it can't really be in order to continue pumping millions of poison into our atmosphere can it ?
What would you be prepared to sacrifice ?

Quote:
The protesters have also been joined by a local resident, James Payne, who says that uncertainty about the future expansion of the airport had prevented him from selling his house.

Er, 'scuse me mate. Didn't you notice an airport when you bought the place? :angry4:
bodger

yeah ! but it wasn't that big when we bought it ! :-) and they are protesting about a global issue and not merely a local one.
Bazzer

My point exactly.
He gets a mention for a purely selfish standpoint. His property value.
No mention of the eco. problem. Sod global warming, I can't sell my house. :angry4:
conundrum

I have no problem with their argument. I just hope that in these scary days of terror threats that they BEHAVE themselves and do not put other people in danger because of their standpoint. All that will acheive would be to put everyones backs up against them and lose them the whole point of the argument.
Countrysider

I hope they all walked there :smt103

ive managed 35 years and only 1 short haul flight!occasional use is fine but how can anyone justify flights every year?we are all suffering due to the increase on duty on fuel whether for heating or transport, why shouldnt air companies pay 80% on their fuel like i pay on diesel? :angry4:

me i think you should explore your own country before being herded off like cattle to gigantic unfinished hotels in sunny places. put money into your own economy and see what your own islands have to offer in the way of food culture, and wonderful dialects. i toured most of britain in my 20s and i know the weathers cr4p but it's a marvelous place :-)

sure people need to fly, but at a realistic price like fish says if they paid a proper price for their fuel there wouldnae be any third terminal or whatever it is they're protesting about :-)

and as for the so called terrorist threat, well it would be allot less of a threat if less of us would cram together in airports and planes

Planes aren't just used for holiday traffic.
They are used for business and freight.
What percentage does the man in the street with his holiday flights account for? Does any one know?
Personally I hate them and have only flown twice in my life :-? I love my holidays in England and Wales and would like to visit Scotland before too long. I have been to Europe but I have driven.

your dead right about business and freight storm but do we really need onions from NZ at this time of year? i was in the supermarket last week and out of the 4 different types of onion they were all from NZ nothing against NZ but should we not be buying onions from a wee bit nearer home? i mean the lorry/train etc has to pay tax on it's fuel so why not the plane same with apples surely there must be plenty of english apples out there.

dunno about % but i heard on the radio the other day that 18million people fly to spain each year, now bear in mind i did not believe it and my hearings a bit dodgy but i'm sure it's allot :-?

and you really must visit scotland

cheers, paul

I was thinking about this in relation to manufacturing as well. We are buying so much from abroad now. We ship stuff in from America, China, Germany - all over the place!
