A quick visit to the hives..

I'm itching to see how the bees have done over the winter so I keep making a quick visit to see what's going on outside the hive.

I've two hives, one I expected to fail over the winter, but it didn't !!

They are bringing in food!!!

Getting out and about!!

the other hive (Mouse guard has been removed)

Bottoms up!!!

Fingers crossed - it could be a good year!

fantastic pics
And glad both your hives are ok

Mine are out and active. The pup ignored my "no" yesterday and stuck his nose in the entrance to a hive and got stung--so that's a lesson learnt.

I know it is wrong.... but I would have loved to have been a "fly on the wall" so to speak...
It did make me chuckle.

Thursday is looking good for a peek... fingers crossed!

OH checked his again today-convinced they wouldn't've made it as the hive has woodpecker damage. No bees coming out through the front.....they are using the woodpecker holes instead!!

We have a loads of woodpeckers in our area.

When we "put the bees to bed" for the winter we wrap them in a loose band of chicken wire that sits a few inches off the hive except at the corners.
This appears to have worked as there is no 'pecker damage except to the thick floor insulation bats we had on top of the hive to help keep heat in.

Sounds like you may need something like this too.
