A Basic Pigeon Keeping Link. When I was a kid, it seemed that just about everyone around us kept pigeons. Pigeon keeping doesn't seem to be nearly as popular these days.
Ours was a mining village and you could understand the attraction that the miners had for pigeon racing. These men were confined in cramped and dank conditions and must have found a kind of almost spiritual release in being able to think of their birds flying in the open fresh air as they flew from places as far away as France. Putting the romanticism to one side, I remember very well that on race day, us kids were not allowed anywhere near the racing lofts because young kids could spook the birds, cost valuable seconds and cost the pigeon men money.
I'm going to get some pigeons in the next few weeks, partly for old times sake.
