.... The Duke William Burslem Pie and Cask Ale Festival...

.. in aid of Help 4 Heroes!

http://www.dukewilliamburslem.com/festival2011.html

Had a lovely Peppered Steak pie with home made mushy peas, gravy and chunky chips and a lovely pint of an elderflower based ale!  It's our son's birthday today and his sister lives next door to the Duke (Jammy COW!) and she took us out to lunch to celebrate!  There were some gorgeous real ales on offer - absolutely spoilt for choice we were!

Afterwards, we went to the Bull's Head http://www.thepotteries.org/inns/burslem/bulls_head.htm a few doors down, another great place for real ales and I was introduced to the delights of a few Timmermans Strawberry beers!  Lovely!

Oh the memories  I was a bobby in Burslem for four or five years and those pubs were on my beat. The last time that I saw the Duke of William it was up for sale and looked as though it might be closed. Its nice to see it back in circulation.
Like most towns, Burslem has lost a lot of pubs. Everytime I drive past where the Millstone used to be, I can't help but glance to see if there's a row of motorbikes there. It uses to be the greasers and grebos pub for the whole of the Potteries. It was a dangerous place and a watering hole for Hells Angels and the like from all over the country. Happy days Polly, thanks for the memory, Im sitting here trying to remember the names of defunct pubs in the town and where they used to be.

The Duke is almost an exclusively Port Vale pub these days Bodger.  The Leopard is still there, Saggermakers is still there, Post House is still there.  Robbie Williams' dad's pub The Red Lion is still there, as is the Bull's Head, just a few doors down from our daughter's flat - she's one of those people who just gets lucky in everything!

The Saggermakers was called the Marquis of Granby , the Saggermakers is just a trendy new name.

I remember it as the Marquis of Granby Bodger - we used to live in Bradely with relatives in Cobridge so we did a fair bit of driving through there.

Do you remember Bradely WMC. I had a few late night/early morning lock ins there.
Polly

I remember it but never went in there.  My dad was a member of Cobridge Coronation WMC in Mulgrave Street and there was a WMC in Waterloo Road that we often went to as kids with the relatives from Cobridge - it's a mosque now!

There was also a WMC in Glass Street in Hanley that we sometimes went to - it's gone now though, it's a car park!
