" I'm rather worried about Jim"

On this day in 1969 The BBC Radio serial Mrs. Dale's Diary ended after 21 years and more than 5,400 episodes. Her final words were: "I'm rather worried about Jim...."

Blimey this brings back memories, not because I was an avid listener, Im sure you realise but because the old barber that I used to go to as a child always seemed to have it on his wireless.

I first met this barber, when as a toddlers, Grandma Bodger took my brother and I to another barbers, where the then 14 year old John the apprentice barber was working.
Years later, John set up his own shop in Cornhill, which was enroute to the local pit. His shop would open at 4.00am so that the  the miners could call in and  get their haircut on the way to work. It was tradition that he maintained for decades and long after the pit had closed. He was very much a 'something for the weekend sir' traditional barber.
On a visit home a couple of years ago, I was saddened to see that his shop was for sale and that he'd retired, after all, he'd cut my hair through thick and thin for nearly fifty years.

" I'm rather worried about Jim " The shop has since reopened as a unisex hairdressers but  I rather doubt that the opening hours are quite as extensive as they once were.

I remember my mother in law saying she was a fan of Mrs Dale's Diary when my hubby was a toddler and that she used to have tantrums from him when she wanted to listen to it - he'd always want something called 'Tinker and Tucker' on instead!

Tinga and Tucker the two little bears with Auntie Jean Morton ?

I dunno Bodger, I never heard of them apart from my MIL's tales - and my mum definitely wouldn't have been as indulgent as to let me have a kids programme on the radio!

I'm currently whistling the theme tune to Mrs Dales Diary, how sad is that?
Polly

I've just had a listen to it on You Tube!
