I've posted before about the sorry demise of 5 out of 6 of our colonies over the winter. The good news is we're getting two new full colonies on sunday due to my brother in law having to give up beekeeping. Here's the fun bit. They're 300 miles away! The plan is to meet up at the wife's sister's which is about half way, transfer the hives from their car into our van, and pretty much come straight back. Hopefully it will all go according to plan!

Well we picked up the two hives today. A 300 mile round trip but well worth it. Two really good looking colonies both on a brood and a half. Pete had done a great job of securing them for travelling and they're now installed in their new home. We'll let them settle down for a couple of days before having a good look at them. Current plan is to try and keep one of them going in an attempt to harvest some honey, and split the other one, possibly three ways, to increase our stock, but we'll see.

Thanks folks. I have to admit to being a bit nervous about opening the back of the van when we got home knowing there were tens of thousands of potentially angry bees in there! Needn't have worried though.

I've been and had a look into our two new hives this morning. Wow! Two really full on colonies with loads of healthy brood, eggs and larvae. No sign of any queen cups. I've put a super on each of them just to give them a bit more room and we'll see how they're doing at the weekend.

Things have moved on a bit. The two busy hives have produced several queen cells so yesterday we split them. The busier of the two is now three and the other we split two ways. Fingers crossed they'll build up nicely.
