I  keep a few hens up my allotment along with another 4 fellow allotmenteers who have chooks up there also , the problem is that some of the guys who mean well really have little idea , the result  RATS   ! well I waged war on them last week and thought I was doing ok I had trapped 19 in under a week , but yesterday was a real red letter day , I went up about 9a.m. and was shocked to find 7 young rats in the one trap , now I'm 65 yr's old and have caught ????? of rats but never 7 in the one trap ,  Suffice to say I was well pleased .

You don't need me to tell you that if you've trapped that many rats in so short a time, then you've got one heck of a problem. You definitely need to get the other chaps on board ASAP.

5 today, and I am getting the guys together to discuss the next moves which has to be better housekeeping , I think I'm ok , I keep my feed in bins , and only feed what can be eaten up throughout the day , yes there will be some wee bits here or there but in general it's one guy who is the main offender , but I'm sure he will take our advice on board ,

Never ceases to amaze me, the amount of domestic jobs I get come in where people keep a few chickens and so over feed them. I've got one regular woman, ok she's mad as a box of frogs, but I keep telling her, banties need half a handful of feed a day max, x that by x amount of birds "mostly cockerels" and don't put down anymore! No I couldn't do that to my "hens"! So floor literally covered in more pellet than shavings.
Every month at least the call comes in, there's rats everywhere! At least I'll never be out of work with muddled ex townies!

4 in the trap  this morning , and the dog nicked 2 in a compost bin that is just a haven for them , I honestly wonder at some folk one fellow allotmenteer asked me today what I did with them once I had them in the trap ?? she said I should be taking them away and releasing them elsewhere ,!!!! I asked for her home address , needless to say I don't think I will be getting an Christmas Card from her .

That's a lot of rats, seems like you are on a losing battle.  You need to speak to the committee and get a BLOCK treatment on the WHOLE allotment.

Otherwise its will be an on going problem, Info passed onto the committee about the Diseases that rats carry, also its HEALTH & SAFTEY concern.

The next few weeks are a good time for Block treatment and under control before spring and they start breeding full scale ( but they seem to be breeding all year round with our milder climate of  late ).

Anyone in your area with a air rifle and night vision would love a place like this, its either traps ( but I cant see many of the plot holders wanting to set / check traps daily )  So it would be a Bait Station & Poison Treatment.

Good luck

Fingers crossed ,but I think I am making a huge dent in our rat population , last week from SUNDAY 23rd TO SUNDAY 30th I accounted for another 19 rats , it would seem that near the end of the week we were making progress , a couple of other chicken keepers have been putting bait down so they will have accounted for some more , my intention is to keep trapping this week and then put down bait stations , the other allotment holders have all chipped in  5 each to help pay for my efforts , so what started as a problem , became a challenge , and is now a pursuit !!
