This summer I could have taken you in the daytime to fields and shown you hundreds of rabbits but Myxy got them a few months ago and now there are the odd one or two surviving.

Not here mate, its definitely Myxy. We get massive numbers of rabbits and then the disease knocks them back. This summer the dead and dying were everywhere, the place was quite literally stinking.

You are kidding aren't you?

In the last 12 months and within the Norwich outer ring road I have seen mixy free Rabbits at; Lionwood, Ketts Heights, St Jame's Hill, Mousehold Heath, St Clements Park, Racecourse Heath pitch & Putt, Waterloo Park, Waterloo junior school playing field, Wensum Park, Train Wood, Anderson's Meadow, Cowholme Meadow, The Castle Gardens (Yes, the Castle Gardens bang in the centre of the city), Rosary Road cemetery, Thorpe Hamlet waterworks, Carey's meadow and County Hall.

Recently I have seen rabbits in virtually every field, park and open space beyond Norwich; Whitlingham, Trowse, Stow Bedon, Eaton, Caister St Edmund, Costessey, Earlham, Lakenham, Larkman, Marlpit, Hellesdon, Catton, Sprowston, TSA and Postwick.

Probably because it is not worth the effort or expense of shooting or snaring when the supplying rate is less than £1 per gutted rabbit.

On the market I can buy rabbits for £2.OO each and at a city game dealer and butchers they are only £3.00 a brace, and at those prices you wouldn't be making any money unless you could guarantee nobbling 150-200 rabbits a night.

If I want a rabbit for us or for Oz it is only a 30 minute walk out with a catty.

As far as I am aware there is only the one stall on the market that sells rabbits & game.............. but I cannot remember the name of it.

Whereabouts locally I whack my rabbits ... you have to be joking if you think I'm going to tell you, you'd end up poaching my patch! But just look at the list I've made above.

Well with the dry summer we had the rabbits have made a real come back.
Even right up on the Fells of Teesdale there numbers have increased.
On the fells there is generally more Hares than Rabbits now.

By the way we get 50p per ferreted rabbit by the game deal, 30p per shot rabbit.

Goodness me! that doesn't even pay for the cartridges or the effort involved.

Its nice to get paid for what you do, but at the end of the day, most of us would do what we do for nothing. Its a sport not a job.
