Last Friday the decision was taken, with a very heavy heart, to help my old greyhound Jake on his way.
He has been progressively getting frailer, and was almost blind, but was happy enough.
Unfortunately he picked up a bad virus that robbed him of his remaining strength.
His weight plummeted, and his muscle wasted, and within 4 days he was unable to support his own weight.
After a sleepless night, I came down stairs to find that he had crawled to his water bowl, and his head was just resting on the lip of the bowl.
He'd had enough.

His favourite vet called round that afternoon.
I made Jake his last bowl of tea which he loved, then he went to sleep calmly, with his usual dignity, with his head resting on my knee.

Today would have been Jake's 13th birthday.

So long old lad, you were a good pal.

A friend to the end. RIP Jake.
They do tend to become an integral part of the family and are a great loss when they quit, I know.

So sorry for your loss but you can be sure he'll now be running around in those meadows over the Bridge.

You may have seen this before, it says everything really;

-The Last Battle-

"If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep
Then you must do what must be done
For this last battle can't be won

You will be sad, I understand
Don't let your grief then stay your hand
For this day, more than all the rest
Your love for me must stand the test

We've had so many happy years
What is to come can hold no fears
You'd not want me to suffer, so
The time has come, please let me go

Take me where my needs they'll tend
And please stay with me 'til the end
Hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you do for me
Although my tail its last has waved
From pain and suffering I've been saved

Please do not grieve, it must be you
Who has this painful thing to do
We've been so close, we two, these years
Don't let your heart hold back its tears"

Sleep well Jake, you were a loved boy.

Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way.

We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan. >>
