These people are not so many miles up the road from us.

http://www.hootonshomegrown.com/index.html

Although they are obviously a fairly large concern, they still come across very much as a family run business. Their website portrays an ethical and diverse way of an extended family making a living from the land.
My! That was a mouthful wasn't it?  I've not been to their main farm shop on Anglesey but I have been to their outlet at the Fron Goch Garden Centre near Caernarfon. I think its a franchise there, but anyway, their food looks well presented, with plenty of information at hand for the purchaser.

I'm still following my dream of making my own apple juice and selling it commercially. Hootons are already well into this but as a small part of a much bigger and wider operation. All the same, I'd love to have a look behind the scenes to see how they set about making their apple juice. I obviously know the basics but its the finer points that I'm unsure about.

Once again, as is the case with all the food producers mentioned in this section, its nice to see people setting up and running businesses that t produce food that the big supermarket chains can't hope to match.

Here's a bit of a blast from the past.

Hootons have a shop selling their produce within a local garden centre. We called in there today and were somewhat shocked to see that they were selling their home produced apple juice for £3.60p  per 75cl bottle.
I think that their price was somewhat OTT but realize that we are most certainly under valuing our own equally as good product.

If within the next week or so, you get the chance, could you check out the price of local farm pressed apple juice in your locality?

Many thanks

PS. Its still a brilliant little farm shop.

Yes it is a brilliant little shop - just up the road from me. I buy free range chicken livers from there for making pate. There was a time you could buy a tub of chicken livers in the local supermarket, but haven't seen them around for years, so was delighted ti finde Hootons had them - and free range too!
