After the disappointment of our recent holiday in Malta, I've been trawling the internet for something a little more us.
How would you fancy a break on the Isle of Eigg?

http://www.isleofeigg.net/index.html

Have a look at section on the isles website that deals with the islands move  towards greener power. I know that the move may in part be fueled by the islands remoteness but these sort of schemes could be the way forward for many more  of us. Every little helps as a particularly aggressive national company says. Its certainly got to be a better option than nuclear power.

Its a great shame that we can't all be on the Isle of Eigg for a get together this evening, because I have a feeling that they might be having a bit of a kali tonight.

On this day in 1997 The residents of Eigg, a small island off the west coast of Scotland, bought their island with help from an anonymous English millionairess, after an eight-month ownership battle.
Finding a hotel for B&B mind be a bit of a problem, but then, thats along with the lack of bingo facillities is part of the islands attraction.

IIRC, Soil And Soul by Alastair McIntosh is about the struggle of the people of Eigg to buy the place. It's a very interesting read. Not sure how that's relevent to the original post, but I thought I'd share anyways.

I'll check it out on ABE books.

There are a few copies available on the first page.

It's many many years since I've been to any of the inner Hebrides, they are all accessible from the port of Mallaig, so you could base yourself round that area somewhere and good old Caledonian McBrayne will get you to most of the Islands. It's a beautiful area but pick your time of year and take your midge repellant.

Try Iceland mate! can't get much greener than being powered by volcanoes and is a truly unique place to visit, you don't have to be there long to see and feel why a high proportion of Icelandic folk believe they share their island with elves and fairies!

The whole island is one huge building site from end to end. Lots of unfinished concrete and bad block work, some of it decades old and not recently started projects. Hardly a wild bird to be seen or heard on the island, if it flies, it dies.

Should have come to Denmark then mate, good food, good beer, good fishing, and no unfinished concrete block work, and plenty of wildlife.

I wish.

Karens come back home this evening, with a brochure and map on Sark. One of her patients goes there regularly and it looks like absolute heaven. Right up our street. Not a car or bingo hall in sight.
